Communal-ism / Violence / Harmony : Identity – The Construction Of Selfhood

This film questions the idea of the self as a fixed and predetermined thing and looks at how identities are a product of our mass mediated culture. One aspect of identity involves invoking our difference from others (for example, Asian versus European). At the same time, identity is also a relationship. Identity is enmeshed in relations of power, be they of gender, race or religion. Through the writings of riot – affected children, Sant Kabir and others, the video makes a case for re – thinking of our differences and identities.

Communal-ism / Violence / Harmony : Tamas (Vol- I &II )

Tamas (Darkness) brings back poignant memories of Partition and the horrors that followed it. The famous Bombay High Court judgement says Tamas is an anatomy of that tragical period. It depicts how communal violence was generated by fundamentalists and extremists in both communities and how innocent persons were duped into serving the ulterior purposes of fundamentalists and communalists of both sides… how realisation ultimately dawns as to the futility of it all and finally how inherent goodness in human nature triumphs and both communities learn to live in amity. The message is loud and clear, directed as it is against the sickness of communalism.

Environmental Awareness : One Hundred Years of Drought

The video examines the causes of recurrent drought in Maharashtra, attempting to demonstrate the extent to which drought is a man-made phenomenon, fallout of ecologically unsound policies and practices, both at macro and micro levels. It includes a brief review of the impact of colonial rule and famine policy, as well as the post-independence path of development, premised on the growth of heavy industry, large dams and the modernisation of agriculture. This has resulted in deforestation, soil erosion and depletion of groundwater reserves. The need is for alternative approaches involving people’s participation in integrated watershed management – based on the principles of sustainable development, self-reliance and equity.
